Transforming call center authentication with voice biometrics

The phone channel is the last place most institutions still authenticate with secrets a fraudster can buy. Voice biometrics replace the secret with the person.

Every other channel has moved on. Online banking has device binding, push approvals, and risk scoring. The call center, for most credit unions and community banks, is still running on a name, a date of birth, and a security question — the exact details that turn up in every breach dump and on every social profile.

Verifying who is calling, not what they know

Voice biometrics build a mathematical model of a member's voice — a voiceprint — from the unique physical and behavioral characteristics of how they speak. On future calls, the live audio is compared against that voiceprint to confirm identity. There is nothing to remember, nothing to type, and nothing a fraudster can look up.

Active and passive, working together

There are two ways to enroll and verify, and the strongest programs use both:

  • Active — the member speaks a short passphrase to enroll and to verify. Clear, explicit, and easy to explain.
  • Passive — the voiceprint is built and matched from natural conversation in the background, with no passphrase and no added steps for the caller.

Passive verification is what lets an agent confirm identity within the first few seconds of natural conversation, before the member has even stated why they called.

Built into the call, not bolted onto it
